°ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ Gulf Chapter's sustainable development series 2: Route to net zero – Regional case studies summary story

The second part of the °ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ Gulf Chapter sustainable development series focused on built projects in the Gulf that were designed with sustainability and low carbon as a major driving factor. The strategies deployed were presented by their designers, and the available data reviewed to determine ultimate performance.

30 April 2021

This webinar showcased regional projects in the Gulf including the Bee’ah Headquarters by Zaha Hadid Architects (presented by Farah Naz from the sustainability consultant Buro Happold), the Msheireb project by Allies and Morrison presented by Simon Gathercole, and MASDAR’s Eco-villa presented by Chris Wan.

The impact of material choices, the amount of glazing designed, and passive features were discussed – as well as how solar and offsetting can help projects achieve net zero carbon. Embodied and in use were also discussed, with metrics from the projects presented. The effect on urban design like the Mshreib were explored as well as how to make the architecture contextual, and sustainable.

The webinar was followed by a panel and audience discussion to develop the ideas on how architects and designers can approach this critical issue in the Gulf, with many interesting questions on technical approach and the politics of delivering construction.
