Rains, drains and floods: 700 years of water management and the impact of climate change

Ightham Mote is a 14th century moated manor house in Kent. It is located on a steep sided valley, centred on a watercourse and between many natural springs. It is vulnerable to flooding and the complex roof discharges water over the elevations.

Managing these problems and working with historic culverts and water flows has been a new challenge over the last decade involving the restoration of historic culverts spillways and sluices, flood management, the impact of climate change, unusually heavy rainfall, and the drying out of the mansion after flooding.
