About Spencer Barn and the event

Zac Monro Architects will take us on a journey of their 2023 °ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ Award Shortlisted project: Spencer Barn.

From their first appointment and understanding of the brief, through to works on site and completion. The intention is to touch on design decisions, material selection, and how the juxtaposition of the converted listed barn and a new extension was achieved – balancing old and new.

Spencer Barn is a true example of balancing heritage conservation with modern design through the appreciation of past and present use, materials, scale, and form.

This house meanders through different design styles from agricultural vernacular to contemporary simplicity, brought together around a shared yard on a sheltered plot. The programme of spaces was key to the success of the scheme, with glimpses through and between each building, the inside and outside influence one another to create a harmonious whole.

From a once un-used and dilapidated collection of farm buildings with 1970s/80s additions to keep up with evolving farming practices, to a now converted, conserved, and extended beautiful family home. Its presence on the site presents another evolution of the use of these buildings for years to come.
