Brexit guidance: Recognition of professional qualifications between the UK and EU/EEA

This Brexit guidance explains the recognition of professional qualifications between the UK and EU/EEA.

From 1 January 2021, the mutual recognition of architects’ qualifications across the EU has no longer applied to the UK. This leaves UK architects without the automatic recognition they have previously enjoyed in EU member states.

The guidance below covers recognition of UK qualifications in the EU, and EU qualifications in the UK. If you cannot find the information you are looking for below, please check .

Architects that have already registered with the Architects Registration Board ahead of 31 December 2020 will continue to have these qualifications recognised.

The Architects Registration Board will be able to recognise EEA and Swiss qualifications that are currently recognised under Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC. Architects with these qualifications will be able to apply for recognition of their qualifications on the same basis after the day that the UK leaves the EU, providing they have access to the profession in their home state.

This UK government note covers further information relating to the recognition of qualifications, including those practicing with temporary status and those whose rights are covered by the general system.

The °ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ recommends contacting the Architects Registration Board if there are any further questions relating to the status of your professional qualification.

The Architects Registration Board oversees recognition of qualifications in the UK. This page covers frequently asked questions and outlines routes to application.

Decisions made by regulators in the EU on recognition UK professional qualifications made before the withdrawal date will be unaffected.

This European Commission note covers further information relating to the recognition of UK professional qualifications in the EU for both UK and EU nationals.

If you have not registered in an EU/EEA member state where you believe you will be practicing from 1 January 2021, it is worth contacting the relevant regulator/competent authority as soon as possible.
