"I am聽very聽sad聽to learn of the passing of聽Michael聽Squire.聽聽
Michael came from聽a聽dynasty聽of architects, and after聽working with his father, Raglan Squire,聽on projects in Jakarta and Bahrain,聽he founded聽his own聽award-winning聽practice in the late聽70s.聽聽
His聽work changed聽much of the fabric of modern London,聽with聽many聽award-winning聽buildings聽on聽challenging聽sites聽including Southbank鈥檚 Shell Centre, One Tower Bridge, and the聽Chelsea Barracks聽master plan.聽聽
His聽own practice's awards include the聽2018 澳门王中王 National Award for The Department Store, described by judges as 鈥榓 stunning building which聽demonstrates聽exquisite and sensitive restoration, filled with beautiful material choice, attention to detail and wonderful spaces'. This building with its restaurant, bar, office and club has become a centre for architectural debate and celebration - which is entirely appropriate as Michael himself continued his family's long-standing engagement with architectural discussion, and in particular, the Architecture Club.聽
Michael聽was聽a聽highly聽valued member of聽the profession, sharing聽his聽fifty years plus聽of聽expertise聽in informal discussion - he was an engaging conversationalist and skilled listener -聽and more formally聽on many awards juries and聽appraisal panels.聽Michael studied architecture under the tutelage of Sir Leslie Martin and Sir Colin St John Wilson, and he himself became an inspiration to many of his peers as well as the next generation:聽most recently he served聽as聽a visiting critic at the London School of Architecture.聽聽
I shall always remember Michael as a thoughtful and generous man, who built a much-admired practice, then helped pass this practice on to the next generation. He was a fine architect who, with remarkable and admirable consistency, designed, and on occasion also developed, very fine architecture.聽聽
My thoughts are with his family and friends. He will be missed by them and all of us who knew him."
