Housing and education projects nominated for Wales' Gold Medal for Architecture

Four schemes have been selected for exhibition at this year's National Eisteddfod of Wales, Anglesey and will form the shortlist for The Gold Medal for Architecture and the Plaque of Merit

Four schemes have been selected for exhibition at the 2017 National Eisteddfod of Wales, this year held between 4 to 12 August on Anglesey. The selection was narrowed down from multiple entries and represent the best in recent contemporary architecture in Wales (completed between 1 January 2014 and 14 March 2017). This year's selection was made by Gwyn Lloyd Jones of Studio Egret West, and Geraint Roberts from DarntonB3. The exhibited schemes are:

  • CUBRIC, Maindy Park Cardiff by IBI Group
  • Rhyl High School, Rhyl by AHR
  • Silver House, Gower by Hyde+Hyde Architects
  • Ysgol Bae Baglan, Port Talbot by Stride Treglown

All the above schemes will also be considered for the two following prestigious awards:

The Gold Medal for Architecture (supported by the Design Commission for Wales) - Awarded to the architect or architects responsible for a building, or group of buildings, recommended to the Eisteddfod as being of greatest merit.

Plaque of Merit - To honour smaller projects of a high standard of design, architects are invited to submit either newly built or refurbished projects.

The exhibition aims to enhance the profile of architecture in Wales through the presentation of drawings and models, selected for their quality and their ability to convey the richness of architecture and its value to the culture of Wales. Full details of the exhibition, its opening and the gold medal announcement are available here.
