As part of a major new free exhibition Mies van der Rohe & James Stirling: Circling the Square (8 March 2017 – 25 June 2017), the Royal Institute of British Architects (°ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ) is organising a series of public events, including talks, curator tours, film screenings, courses, workshops and a ‘Late’ evening event.
Learning activities include a free family fun event and a range of hands-on workshops for children and young people in the school holidays, all led by teaching artists and °ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ architects.
Exhibition
8 March – 25 June
The exhibition offers a renewed examination of two iconic architectural schemes proposed for the same site in the City of London; Mies van der Rohe's unrealised Mansion House Square project, and its built successor James Stirling Michael Wilford & Associates' No. 1 Poultry. Presented together for the first time, it offers a unique opportunity to draw comparisons between the design methods of two of the most highly recognised architects of the 20th century, and to trace the continuity in purpose and approach that unites two seemingly dissimilar architectural creations.
Public Events
14 March, 7pm
The Inquiry: Mansion House Square and Number One Poultry
The unrealised Mansion House Square by Mies van der Rohe and its built successor No. 1 Poultry by James Stirling Michael Wilford & Associates led to decades of heated debate amongst the architectural elite and conservation movement. Hear a younger generation of curators, critics and architects debate the appropriateness of the two schemes, making the case for their favourite style: the high-modernist tower versus the postmodern colourful choice, in this participatory event where you, the audience, will act as jury and make the final verdict. Speakers include: Jack Self, Real Review; Vicky Wilson, °ÄÃÅÍõÖÐÍõ; Oliver Wainwright, The Guardian; James Taylor-Foster, Arch Daily.
More speakers to be announced.

Some activities as part of the Late will be guest curated by online magazine Socks Studio.

London’s high-rise future: exhilarating or alarming?
Lord Palumbo faced fierce opposition to build a 19-story ‘skyscraper’ designed by Mies van der Rohe. Taking its cue from the argument to not build tall in 1960s, this panel will discuss whether the debate has had an effect on the current London skyline and should this rigour in assessing tall-buildings be reinstated? With more than 230 high-rise buildings (of over 20 storeys) planned for London, would better quality towers have been built in the City if the Mies scheme was built? What is the future of London’s skyline and its impact on the ground level?

Post-Modernism with Twentieth Century Society
Some critics argued that No.1 Poultry was outdated before the building was complete in 1997. At only 20 years old, No.1 Poultry has now been listed in the wake of a renewed interest in postmodern buildings. This discussion will address postmodern architecture in relation to the wider postmodern movement in art, music and culture which seems to have had a longer life and reach.

Multiple Modernities
Mies van der Rohe is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modernist architecture, however, his work can only be found in the ‘West’; North America and Western Europe.
This lecture will explore multiple readings of modernism through a non-Western lens and re-examine the conventional narrative of Modernism. Explore places that rarely feature in Modernist histories of architecture including: Eritrea, Ghana, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Zambia, China, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Turkey and Brazil.
