Tell us about shedkm and where you came from?
shedkm is a collective of architects based in Liverpool, London and Manchester. We formed 26 years ago to advocate meaningful solutions to degenerated sites and buildings in the North West, championing retrofit and repurposing structures far earlier than the current trend. We went on to apply our skills of design driven, yet viable development, across a number of new build sites nationally and currently operate across the country.
What clients do you work for and why do they come to you?
We offer a personal and unique service to our clients with clear thinking and communication of ideas. Through our deep-rooted belief in regeneration, we see every site as knitting into existing communities and respecting the existing grain of a place, whilst delivering ambitious bold transformations.
This skill set has enabled us to develop an enviable repeat client list with a wide range of like-minded developers from Capital&Centric and Urban Splash in the North to Stanhope, Schroders and Related Argent in the South. Nationally we work with English Cities Fund, Muse, LandsecU+I, Common Developments, HUB, and many more aspirational clients who share our ambitions to feasibly deliver new neighbourhoods; growing and evolving places for people.
How would you sum up your approach to design and execution?
Our design approach is to create simple, bold interventions that create clarity from a masterplan scale, through new or existing buildings, and right down to the details of a home, workplace or cultural intervention. Creating exciting townscape opportunities whilst enabling a streetscape to thrive and improving personal environments inspires us all!
We are passionate about good design and ensure we are relevant to new and emerging trends and regulations whilst also innovating and pushing boundaries. As well as being industry leaders in retrofit, we were also the forerunners of modular construction 10 years ago.
More recently those skills have been applied to a range of social housing solutions in the Royal Borough of Greenwich; combining our placemaking and delivery skills.
What happened in 2023 and what is in store for 2024?
In 2023 we became both an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) and a B-Corp organisation, applying our inclusive, collaborative and sustainable beliefs across our business, as well as our service. We celebrated more awards including a Pineapple Award for Circus Street, Brighton, which exemplifies our approach to mixed-use regeneration and the role of culture.
Our ambitions for the next year are to create positive impact across many more areas of the UK. We will be delivering our first schemes in Scotland and Wales, as well as exploring markets and opportunities globally.
We want to take our grounded approach to combining technological advancement, bold design and place creation to new heights, all the time operating within constraints of regulations and budget. In our view there has never been a better time to challenge perceptions of what is possible and create a bright and sustainable future for all those who live, work or experience our offerings to the built environment.
