AndArchitects believe design is a tool which architects should use more broadly to create intelligent solutions for the complex needs of our clients. With this philosophy, we can deliver bespoke projects at every scale, whilst maintaining an attention to detail, across a broad range of sectors such as high-end residential, sports and events. We believe the role of an architect is all-encompassing, collaborating with artists and specialists in a wide range of disciplines to apply design across every aspect of a project.

With this approach in mind, the recently completed Étoile du Nord Chalet in Val d’Isère, France, epitomises a truly unique and holistic experience, where our work spanned from the architecture to the branding, product design, user experience, and innovative construction methods and materials. This allows us to design comprehensive and bespoke projects, not only for the present, but also for the future.

We thrive on projects where different users come together in new and surprising ways to create rich, interesting and innovative architecture. These are the kind of well-loved buildings that become popular institutions and knit themselves seamlessly into the fabric of the city.

For example, we worked with Uxbridge High School to deliver a music building and an outdoor performance stage integrated into the building which is now used by the Royal Shakespeare Company. At Creasey Park in Dunstable, we provided playing fields, an ATP, BMX track, football pitch and pavilion with changing rooms and community space, shared by Brewers Hill Middle School, two football clubs, the town council, and the local community.

With each global sporting event, legacy is becoming more important in determining success. Host cities are better at ensuring their Olympic parks do not become abandoned sites at the edge of cities. As the parks themselves become integrated into the city, key stadia are converted into permanent fixtures and public facilities.

There have been exciting and interesting ideas for how to reuse temporary global event venues, but designers do not always understand how to deliver these. We research how temporary sports and events venues can be designed to be relocated and reused. We designed several temporary sponsorship pavilions for the 2012 London Olympics, each with its own legacy strategy, as well as our 2016 Rio Olympics handball arena, designed to be disassembled and reconstructed into four schools.

Our passion is to design with legacy built-in from the outset in collaboration with NGOs, suppliers, engineers, and contractors. Currently, we are developing a research project on this topic in conjunction with UCL (University College London), Berkeley, and Nottingham universities. Along this line of research, AndArchitects have worked with the UN Global Alliance for Urban Crises.
