Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall

This project was looking to refurbish the 1895 Gallery building in Newlyn, Cornwall.

Invited Culture and Leisure

MUMA were selected following a competitive interview.

The competition involved two building projects – the refurbishment of the 1895 Gallery building in Newlyn and the conservation of the ground floor of the Exchange building in Penzance to create a second venue.

The judging panel included Sir Nicholas Serota and selected MUMA as the winner to design this prestigious gallery.

The gallery on the seaward side is a glass structure at ground floor level, which supports a first floor clad in wet-laid Cornish slate, a building method specific to the region, but rarely seen in modern buildings. The glass curtain wall allows panoramic views of Newlyn Green and the sea whilst sliding doors lead to a secluded garden and outdoor seating area.
