The elegant design by Niall McLaughlin Architects, provides the most successful resolution to the complex demands of the cafe's highly exposed coastal location.
This was a competition to renovate the cafe facility at the end of Deal Pier in Kent. The project formed part of a series of improvement works carried out by Dover District Council to mark the Pier's Golden Jubilee in 2007.
The pier is generally 7m above sea level, but wave spray frequently breaks over the deck, especially during storms. The new building uses a construction material whose intrinsic properties are naturally suited to this environment.
