Located within the Cultural Industries Quarter Conservation of Sheffield, this project brings back into use four virtually derelict re-brick warehouse buildings. The existing perimeter buildings have been carefully refurbished with a new courtyard infill, providing a double height space and integrated core. New elements are crisp and modern insertions that create flexible workspace for Jaywing, a Sheffield based creative marketing agency. The project ‘speaks’ Sheffield with confidence.
Cartwright Pickard have skilfully negotiated a clever design which seeks to balance the potentially conflicting demands of Landlord and Tenant. Using Construction Management Procurement allowed the developer client and end user to be jointly involved in key decision making regarding the design strategies, M+E systems, fitted furniture and finishes.
The scheme is sympathetic to its context in re-use of existing buildings, but bold clear interventions provide impact. Externally anodised aluminium cladding mark the infill elevation to Matilda Street. Internally exposed concrete and brickwork provides thermal mass which assists the environmental performance of the space. The Courtyard infill virtually doubles the usable space and creates a new heart for the office accommodation.
The space is wonderfully lit by north lights and provides a generous and calm working environment. Furniture and finishes are co-ordinated with a fine attention to detail throughout.
