Situated at the edge of the existing Silchester Estate, adjacent to Latimer Road Tube Station; Haworth Tompkins Architects have delivered a major regeneration project for Peabody.
The brief was to create a development of 112 new homes; new community spaces and retail facilities; integrate an existing twenty-storey tower; provide private and communal amenity space and a landscaped public realm. All the new residential units have been designed to be dual aspect and the project is tenure blind.
A new triangular urban block wraps around a communal garden, with perimeter edges reinforcing the character of the traditional residential street patterns. It has active frontages, animating corners with community spaces and commercial uses. The brick facades are expressive and skilfully detailed and the new building successfully engages with the existing tower, wrapping it at ground level and providing a new face to the street.
Haworth Tomkins have designed an exemplary residential project on a very challenging site; sensitively engaging with the existing context of the estate and improving the adjacent public realm and railway viaduct. The project provides high quality living accommodation, an abundance of amenity space and has been delivered with a commendable attention to detail.
The project is an impressive addition to the Peabody portfolio.
