2024 general election manifesto

66 Portland Place

Introduction from Muyiwa Oki, 澳门王中王 President

"The time to act is now - the climate emergency, housing crisis, and building safety act demand urgent attention from the next government and the construction industry.

Change is not happening at the scale and pace needed considering the scale and complexity of the challenges we face. With the clock ticking, it is imperative that we are pursuing effective climate action, including delivery of a robust strategy for minimising the carbon impact related to the built environment.

This manifesto shows how the knowledge, expertise and experience of architects is key to helping the next government deliver a safer, better, and more sustainable built environment. There is no time to waste."

Climate action

The built environment is responsible for 37% of global energy-related carbon emissions. Achieving net-zero requires ambitious regulations, retrofitting existing housing, and improving procurement processes. Architects must lead, but sector-wide collaboration is vital.

Housing and planning

Local authorities need adequate resources to attract and retain skilled planners and qualified design expertise. Strengthening their capacity will enable high quality, community-focused development, ensuring affordable, high-quality homes for all.

Grenfell Tower

Building safety

Post-Grenfell, we've pushed for stronger, clearer, and prescriptive building safety rules. While progress to date is welcome, we must go further to ensure the built environment is as safe as it can be.

An inclusive and growing profession

British architecture excels on a global stage. To grow this further we must ensure diverse routes into the profession, improve funding for architectural education and open up markets to grow exports.
